FED: Aust and Fiji trade threats at Pacific leaders forum

Prime Minister KEVIN RUDD believes Fiji hasn't done itself any favours by boycotting
the Pacific leaders meeting in Niue.

Mr RUDD arrived in Niue's capital Alofi last night Australian time .. for three days
of talks with 14 other leaders at the 39th annual Pacific Islands Forum.

He suggests that Fiji's boycott of the forum may convince other nations to take a tough
stand on fresh Fijian elections.

Fiji's self-appointed prime minister FRANK BAINIMARAMA is boycotting the summit ..

and has complained he's being pushed to hold elections too soon.

He's told South Pacific governments his country needs their support as it reforms ahead
of promised elections .. but warns it would proceed without them if necessary.

Fiji's slow progress to democracy will be a major focus of the forum .. but the Pacific
leaders are also expected to discuss guest workers schemes and climate change.
